What are Groups?

Groups can be used to organize your links into various buckets, in order to track click data coming from different places. For example, create a group for your 'Website,' another for your 'Facebook' page, and yet another for your 'Twitter' page. Within each of these groups, you can add your geni.us links, and begin to see how your various marketing campaigns compare to one another.

Managing Groups

Every account comes with the 'Default' group already present to begin with. You can easily add as many groups as you want, but consider using tracking tags to organize your links first, if you anticipate needing as much reporting granularity as possible.

You can add new groups by navigating to the Groups page and clicking the Add a new group button, or by clicking the folder icon and selecting New group.. when creating a new geni.us link.

From the Groups page, you can edit groups, archive (or restore) groups, and see the total click data for multiple groups. You can also click any of the Groups to get a detailed Performance report for the group as a whole.

Group Overrides

The tracking IDs displayed on the Affiliate page represent the 'Default Affiliate Settings'. These are the tracking IDs that will be used on all of your links, unless you set up an exception. We call these exceptions 'Overrides'

Here's the process for setting up a Group to use a different set of IDs:

  1. Head over to the Groups page, and create a new Group [we could call it 'WebsiteB' as an example]

  2. Head to the Affiliate Page and click 'Manage Affiliate Overrides'

  3. Select the new Group [WebsiteB] from the drop-down menu

  4. Add in the alternate set of Associate IDs, one for each storefront.

  5. These IDs will now be used for every link in the 'WebsiteB' Group. So just move your links into this group if they're for that website.

There isn't an easy way to move a bunch of links into a group in bulk, unfortunately.
The process is: Find the link on your list > Edit the link > Click the folder icon to change the Group for that link > click Save.
You can also easily move a link into a group when you're building it for the first time, also by using the folder button.

Each group will be associated with a set of affiliate tracking parameters. If you have multiple Amazon or iTunes affiliate IDs / tags, and you want to be able to track separate items per tracking tag, Geniuslink provides you a way to do so through Group Overrides. With group overrides, you can create links, separate them into groups, then have those links use a different affiliate ID (or tracking tag) automatically added to each link when someone clicks. Here's how to configure the overrides:

Adding Overrides:

1. Log into your Geniuslink Account.
2.
Navigate to the Groups page and create a new group (name it whatever you’d like)

3. Navigate to the Affiliate page and select Manage Affiliate Overrides

4. Choose the new group you created in step 2, which will bring you to a page with all of your default tracking IDs. From here, simply adding in your new IDs will replace the 'default' IDs.
Alternatively, you can click the Set Override text.

Now, whenever a link in your Group is clicked, our service will affiliate the override IDs you set! If no override ID exists for a storefront, we'll always use whatever's set up for your default group.

You can select what group a link belongs to from the Link Creator / Link Editor page.

To create new a link and place it into a group, follow the steps below:

1. Navigate to the Links page
2. Paste your link destination into the New.. field at the top of the list to create a new link.
3. Just below the large "geni.us/xxxxx" shortlink header is a folder icon. Click this icon to select the group that you created from a drop-down menu.

4. Once you’re happy with your link, click Save
5. Copy that link to wherever you’d like it to live. That link will automatically be globalized and affiliated with the proper tracking ID that you set.

Using Overrides with the JS Snippet:

If you have multiple Affiliate IDs and you're utilizing the Geniuslink JavaScript snippet on multiple websites, you can also use the group overrides to keep your clicks/commissions separate per Affiliate ID.

To do this, follow the steps above to create a Group Override. Then head over to the Tools page to generate a JavaScript Snippet. When you're generating the snippet, there is a drop-down menu to select which Group the links will be credited to. Now  buy.geni.us links converted on the website you install the snippet on will be affiliated with those override IDs.
